A pearl's luster is a measure of the quantity and quality of light reflected from the surface of a pearl or just below its surface. The luster of a good quality pearl is crisp and bright. You should almost be able to see your reflection in a pearl's surface. A pearl that appears too white, dull, or chalky is of low quality.
A pearl's iridescence is the way the prism of natural light breaks down deep within a pearl's aragonite layers. This iridescence gives the pearl its brilliance, which is enhanced by reflections of color ranging from white to black in shades of cream, pink, blue, peacock green, purple, and gold.
- The classification concerning the quality of the surface of Tahitian cultured pearls is:
Category A: Pearl with at most one imperfection or group of slight imperfections concentrated on at most 10% of its surface. Very beautiful luster.
Category B: Pearl with some slight imperfections concentrated on no more than 30% of its surface. Good or medium luster.
Category C: Pearl with slight imperfections concentrated on no more than 60% of its surface. Medium luster.
Category D: Pearls with either slight imperfections on more than 60% of the surface, without deep imperfections, or slight and deep imperfections concentrated on no more than 60% of its surface. Low luster.
To avoid damaging your Tahitian pearls, be careful not to use any chemicals on them. To keep the leather looking beautiful over time, I recommend greasing it from time to time with beeswax.
